Even the Angels
05:10
|
|||
We've been walking this road for so long
All this sorrow weighing heavy on our backs
Walking alone, ain't no shelter
When the thunder moans and cracks
We just want to set everything down
To just sit by the side of the road
But still we keep walking, hoping we'll find
The right way to go
We need to find somewhere to rest,
Somewhere we won't feel so alone
Because even the angels, sometimes,
They just want to go home.
It's okay to lay down your troubles
And stop worrying for a little while
Just let it go, and rest
Your case in this trial
There are times to stop counting your prayers
Wondering how many reach heaven above
Then you can lie down, and just sleep
And know that you're loved
We need to find somewhere to rest,
Somewhere we won't feel so alone
Because, baby you know,
Even the angels, sometimes,
They just want to go home.

Drive Away
04:11
|
|||
She was working on the dayshift as a checker at the grocery
In the town where both her parents were born,
And on her break she'd sit and stare out the window and see nothing
But acres after acres of corn.
Now her boyfriend picked her up every day after work
In his beat-up old Chevrolet
One night said, "Baby, where you wanna go? The evening is ours,"
And she said, "Honey, let's just drive away."
Yeah, she said, "Honey, let's just drive away."
I don't know just where I'm headed
I don't know just where I'm bound
But one thing I know -
The place I'm gonna go
Is a long way from this town.
Well her boss was always yelling when she got to work late,
Like there was ever any customers around.
But she'd been working long enough there that the pay was pretty good
And there weren't no other jobs to be found.
So she tried hard to get there just a little after eight,
Although that made for such a very long day.
So when her boyfriend picked her up that day after work,
She told him "Honey, let's just drive away."
Yeah, she said, "Honey, let's just drive away."
I don't know just where I'm headed
I don't know just where I'm bound
But one thing I know -
The place I'm gonna go
Is a long way from this town.
He said, "Now let me get this straight, you're just leaving town tonight?"
And she said, "Honey, that's sure as hell right.
You can come or you can stay and I won't think worse of you,
But as for me I'm on my way tonight."
The ride back to her place seemed like it lasted for days
Because neither one of them had much to say.
When he pulled up in her driveway, she got out and said "Good luck,"
Then he watched her as she drove away.
Yeah, he watched her as she drove away.
I don't know just where I'm headed
I don't know just where I'm bound
But one thing I know -
The place I'm gonna go
Is a long way from this town.

The Ballad of Gimpy Cat
04:19
|
|||
He's got three good legs
And just one ball
But when he's walking around the yard
Gimpy Cat's walking tall
The other animals
They might stop and stare
But gimpy cat
Gimpy cat doesn't care
Because gimpy cat knows
That life ain't always fair
You play the hand you're dealt
Or you can cry and get nowhere
He might never catch a mouse
Might never catch a squirrel
So instead of chasing birds
He'll just flip one at the world
Gimpy Cat
No spring in his step
Not a lot of bounce
But gimpy cat's got love
And he knows that's all that counts
You can tell him your troubles
If you're feeling that way
But he's got three good legs and just one ball
So you can guess what he might say
Because gimpy cat knows
That life ain't always fair
You play the hand you're dealt
Or you can cry and get nowhere
He might never catch a mouse
Might never catch a squirrel
So instead of chasing birds
He'll just flip one at the world
Gimpy Cat
Gimpy Cat keep holding on to what you know is true
Gimpy Cat, you know I've got so much to learn from you
Some others might give up but Gimpy Cat don't ever stop
Every day is New Year's Eve, he's waiting for that ball to drop
Gimpy Cat

Keep Knocking
04:48
|
|||
Well I know, we've both been hurt
Had to bury our lives' dreams in the dirt
Now I'm standing at your door
And I won't go away, no matter what for
I'll keep knocking
Let me in
I'll keep knocking
Let me in
I'll help carry all your worries
Let me in
It might rain, it might snow
Ain't nothing this world can do to make me go
All these pains, all these doubts,
These are things that we can live without
So I'll keep knocking
Let me in
I'll keep knocking
Let me in
I'll help carry all your worries
Let me in

Lilacs
05:45
|
|||
First house together
They moved in one bright spring
Outside the front door
The lilacs were blossoming
While eating breakfast
His back against the window
He'd watch her smile
At the flowers 'round his shoulder
But the lilacs
Don't grow here anymore
Once they were beautiful
But that was long ago
She wants to stay
But in her heart she knows
That the lilacs
They don't grow here anymore
One tired spring
He barely glanced up at her face
Thoughts passed him by
But they never left a trace
So she watched alone
The purple wilting brown
Morning coffee
Petals drifting to the ground
And the lilacs
Don't grow here anymore
Once they were beautiful
But that was long ago
She wants to stay
But in her heart she knows
That the lilacs
They don't grow here anymore
The flowers didn't bloom
One broken spring
He never noticed
And she never said a thing
Still she searched past
His shoulder every day
He cut the bush down
The day she moved away
Now the lilacs
Don't grow here anymore
Once they were beautiful
But that was long ago
She wants to stay
But in her heart she knows
That the lilacs
They don't grow here anymore
Though she knows
He might never understand
She needs to be
Where the lilacs grow again

Prufrock
04:26
|
|||
Let us go then, you and I
As the evening is stretched out against the sky
Like a patient, etherized
Upon the table
Let us go through half-deserted streets
All the muttering retreats
Of one night stands and cheap hotels, and sawdust restaurants
With oyster shells
I've heard the mermaids singing
Heard them singing each to each
I've heard the mermaids singing
I do not think they will sing to me
I grow old, I grow old
I'll wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled
I will wear white flannel trousers
And walk along the beach
There will be time to wonder do I dare
Time to turn around and descend the stairs
There will be time to wonder do I dare
Disturb the universe
I've heard the mermaids singing
Heard them singing each to each
I've heard the mermaids singing
I do not think they will sing to me
I've known them all already, known them all
All the evenings, the mornings, and afternoons
I've measured out my life in coffee spoons
So tell me, how should I presume?
I've heard the mermaids singing
Heard them singing each to each
I've heard the mermaids singing
I do not think they will sing to me

Through the Rain
03:11
|
|||
Those angry clouds have been closing in since morning
As darkness falls, we know the storm is coming
The sky breaks open, the wind rips through the trees
But the storm outside can't get to you and me
The rain is pounding like hoofbeats on the ground
The moon's light can't reach us through the clouds
And we wonder how this roof can stand the strain
My darling, let me hold you through the rain
We've locked up the barn, the animals are fine
So let's start a fire and pour some apple wine
Sometimes in life, the storms roll in so fast
So sit close to me and we'll wait for it to pass
While the rain is pounding like hoofbeats on the ground
The moon's light can't reach us through the clouds
And we wonder how this roof can stand the strain
My darling, let me hold you through the rain
The rain is pounding like hoofbeats on the ground
The moon's light can't reach us through the clouds
You can rest somewhere you won't feel no pain
My darling, let me hold you through the rain

Too Long
05:05
|
|||
It's been too long since I've seen the ocean
I miss the roar of the waves
It's been too long since I've seen my grandpa
I think I'll go visit his grave
It's been too long since I've hugged my little boys
I've been at work all day
It's been too long since I've talked to God
I think I'll take some time out to pray
It's been too long since I've talked to God
And I don't know where the time goes
I need to return to God's grace
Like a river to the ocean flows
When it seems like life isn't quite right
Then I know
It's been too long since I've talked to God
It's been too long since I've read the Good Book
Some days it just sits on the shelf
It's been too long since I've really listened
To anyone besides myself
It's been too long since I've looked at the world
With reverence, wonder, and awe
It's been too long since I've just sat in stillness
Too long since I've talked to God
It's been too long since I've talked to God
And I don't know where the time goes
I need to return to God's grace
Like a river to the ocean flows
When it seems like life isn't quite right
Then I know
It's been too long since I've talked to God

Unsung Lullaby
03:30
|
|||
The mountains and the hills have gone to bed
The ocean's found a place to rest her head
While you sleep the world will wait for you
And I will too
Tomorrow will bring promises to keep
But for now
Sleep, my love, sleep
The moon has sung his children lullabies
The stars have yawned and closed their drifting eyes
While you sleep the world is sleeping too
And when you wake, the world is made anew
Let me stroke your hair as softly as a breath
Lay your head down
Rest, my love, rest
The sky is under covers safe and warm
The clouds have said good night to all their storms
While you sleep the world will wait for you
And I will too
Tomorrow will bring promises to keep
But for now, sleep, my love, sleep
