about

The lyrics were co-written with my dear friend Christy Dral. A full-band version of this song, with banjo, bass, drums, pedal steel and harmonica, will appear on my forthcoming album Another Door, due out in Nov. 2015. But this version was recorded with just me and a guitar, live at Joyland Studio in a single take.

I wondered what would happen if I wrote a divorce song where the primary emotion wasn't anger or bitterness, but empathy. This was the best I could do.

I'd be honored if you'd take this track as a free gift. Thanks for listening.

lyrics

First house together
They moved in one bright spring
Outside the front door
The lilacs were blossoming
While eating breakfast
His back against the window
He'd watch her smile
At the flowers 'round his shoulder

But the lilacs don't grow here anymore
Once they were beautiful, but that was long ago
She wants to stay, but in her heart she knows
That the lilacs, they don't grow here anymore

One tired spring
He barely glanced up at her face
Thoughts passed him by
But they never left a trace
She watched alone
As the purple wilted brown
Morning coffee
Petals drifting to the ground

And the lilacs don't grow here anymore
Once they were beautiful, but that was long ago
She wants to stay, but in her heart she knows
That the lilacs, they don't grow here anymore

The flowers didn't bloom
One broken spring
He never noticed
And she never said a thing
Still she searched past
His shoulder every day
He cut the bush down
The day she moved away

And the lilacs don't grow here anymore
Once they were beautiful, but that was long ago
She wants to stay, but in her heart she knows
That the lilacs, they don't grow here anymore

Though she knows
He might never understand
She needs to be
Where the lilacs grow again
